    1. Fiscal Wiz

It is not enough to just read numbers. Your accountant should have the ability to sit back on your first visit, flit through your balance sheet and give you a precise and instant reading of the state of your business. If on first visit they can't do this, grab your hat and make for the door! You desire honest and direct advice and an amazing accountant can practically feel numbers and company health. They are able to do it well and they can do it instantly.
    2. Big and Little Picture Thinker

    Xero Help
This is vital. An excellent accountant understands the detail of your financial statements. That is what all accountants are trained to do. But a great cpa moves beyond conceptualises and publication balancing and understands the global or structural strengths and weaknesses of your financial situation. They develop and see outstanding results for the business and give you a roadmap of advice on how to get there.
    3. Have They Grown Their Own Business?

What's the state in their own business? Is it in good shape? This doesn't mean what it does mean is they have an excellent running business or firm that is thriving and healthy, although they have created a corporation. Have they taken hazards? Are they progressive and proactive? Are they in step with the times? Do they employ modern technologies? These are good indexes. Take note if this is happening and when it is, you may be in the correct place. If not, find a beanie who is doing exactly that!
    4. Great Communication

Does your accountant stick to account - speak or do they follow best practise clear English as part of their communications policy with clients? Are communications strained and laboured or simplified so there is clarity and mutual understanding? You've let us know this is one of the single most important qualities to you personally. Clients tell us they desire good, plain, smart help. They don't want to learn about academic theories on the development of tax legislation in NZ over the past thirty years!
    5. What Kind of Team Does Your Accountant Have?

A great accountant isn't frightened to fire team players who aren't performing for you, the client. A fantastic accountant will keep searching for key team players who bring to a fantastic job. They go above and beyond to source team members who deliver not only some financials, but quality financials that maximise your return honestly and ethically without cutting corners. There is no sloppy at Slaters. It's all about an excellent team. From Tina (our only excellent front of house reception man) through to Harsha, (the leader of our Financials Team) and Beth and Shareena. Excellent staff - longstanding members over many years - great individuals who work well together for the team and client.
    6. Comprehends An Excellent Business Model.

It's not just about a set of financials. A fantastic accountant enables you to develop an extremely good, complete business model over several years. We're proud to say we have customers who've been with us 25 years and some of these have already been challenged to grow and flourish their businesses even when it's been painful! The ones who've stuck with our enormous picture plans reap the benefits. Have a think about moving on if your accountant doesn't help you develop a healthful, longterm business model.
    7. Are They Easy to Work With?

Up front payments and costs that are clear? And we do not mean "bundling packages." We decided against these some years past in favour of greater transparency. A clear, fixed price you could pay off or pay in one fell swoop. (Bundling is a monthly payment that can eek away in the background without you ever completely getting the full deal. It's a confusion for clients as they're locked directly into their package and can't ever really access anything beyond their bundle without paying extra bucks. We do not do that. Not transparent enough for Slaters and we've seen it eventuate into relationship dislocation between associate and client.) Easy to make an appointment? Are there annoying and hourly rates that are sneaky concealed somewhere in the fine print? An incredible accountant is completely transparent about prices and is also very accessible. They're easy to talk to and return to you personally immediately via free meetings, phone calls or e-mail. At Slaters it is possible to pop in and catch Brad and Brett on the hop, for no extra cost. That's ease!
    8. Trustworthy

This is a biggie. Clients have reported that they're actually more comfortable having an accountant who is NOT out and around at every social function and gathering. You've told us an amazing accountant isn't boozing it up at the pub and letting loose with your private financial matters. There's a code of ethics to stick to, which must be taken very, very seriously. A fantastic accountant understands they're working with soul and the financial heart of the clients and their families and honours that information accordingly.

These are just a few of the key elements you have to look for when sourcing a really good accountant. We hope it helps you. And remember, should you be looking to alter beanies or find one which can really help you, don't hesitate to email us in at the office on brett@slater.co.nz . You can even book a free appointment online here . Make a scheduled appointment and talk with Brett about enhancing your financial future. It's free once you discuss with Brett, and chances are you'll come on board with Slaters.
